Cycads

Ancient relics from a time before dinosaurs first roamed the earth, Cycads, though sometimes associated with palms, are unlike any other plant species on earth.

Madera Palms has nearly a dozen Cycad varieties ranging from the common to exotic. All were germinated and grown from seed, a hobby begun some 30 years ago that continues today. We have available in commercial quantities several species growing both in the ground and in 3, 5 and 10 gallon containers, including popular varieties of Cycas and Dioons.

The Cycas taiwaniana cycads grown in Riverside are fast growers with a trunk rate of growth somewhat slower than the C. thouarsii but faster than the C. revoluta. Native to Taiwan (or China), this cycad is salt tolerant and cold hardy, though it is known to be less resistant to frost than the C. revoluta.

These cycads grow quite well at the Grove in Riverside, CA, planted between rows of palms, slightly sheltered from the searing sun and with plenty of water and heat. Their native environment in Madagascar and east coast of Africa is hot, humid - a tropical to subtropical climate where the Cycas thouarsii grows in river deltas, and along the coast in woodland areas with ample rain fall. This species will not tolerate cold temperatures or winter frost well.
